The middle grades represent a significant turning point in students’ lives. In middle school students’ solidify conceptions about themselves as learners of mathematics. They will be able to draw conclusions about their competence in mathematics, their attitudes, interest and motivation. These conceptions will influence their approach to the study of mathematics which in turn will affect their career goals and future undertakings.
At this stage of mathematical reasoning elementary and middle school students find both challenge and support in their mathematics lessons.
They will be drawn to the subject and be able to use their emerging capabilities of finding and imposing structure. Verifying, thinking hypothetically, comprehending cause and effect and engaging in abstraction and generalization.
As in the grade bands, students in the middle grades need a balanced mathematics program that encompasses all ten standards-number & operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis & probability, representation, problem solving, reasoning & proof, communication, connection and representation.
